Research Plan

Kiernan’s Research Plan

For my research, the first step would be to read through W3’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) in their entirety, taking notes along the way. These are considered the go-to guidelines to use when making websites accessible for people with disabilities.  I would then take a close look at other resources explaining these guidelines, such as Google’s free Udacity course and WebAIM’s WCAG checklist, to see how they organize the information presented in WCAG to be easier to follow.  WCAG is a lengthy list of rule after rule, and most tutorials try to group rules together to make them easier to remember. I can use these organization methods as inspiration when I decide how I want to group the information when I present WCAG to the viewer.

I would also seek out surveys and statistics which showcase the current state of web accessibility.  I’m curious about things like how often web accessibility is taught, how often it’s incorporated into the process, and how many websites are accessible vs. how many aren’t. If possible, I would like to know what the general opinion on web accessibility is. It might also be useful to know how many people are shut out from using websites because of accessibility issues.  This information could be helpful in conveying the importance of learning web accessibility to the viewers of my tutorials.
