Kenny’s Research Update #2

I explored the many different visual effects of Zwobot, the music visualization software I am using for the visual aspects of my project. I noticed that there are three general categories of effects being simple (but still powerful) effects with two parameters each. The next category has more in-depth effects with more parameters that do less. The final category is effects that manipulate 3D animations in various ways, which do not always work well, but some of these effects can warp the entire 2D video image bending it and making it 3D. These 3D video effects also have the functionality to use custom premade 3D animated files adding more customizability. I also took note of two video effects that cause Ableton to crash, one causes this every time and the other one caused a crash once. I also roughly figured out a way to change videos based on what drum I hit, but Zwobot and Max for Live do not make this easy as Zwobot is better for using layers of very customizable video effects with limited precise video triggering capabilities. I also found cool uses in oscillating the parameters of video effects using a Max for Live device called LFO (Low-Frequency Oscillator) so a Zwobot video effect would continue being applied and then taken off automatically. I can then hit a drum or cymbal to momentarily increase or decrease the speed of the oscillating video effect parameters. I do plan now to apply these new video effect techniques and use 3D video morphing effects for their own section in my project.

For the song and sound design I am making for my project, I added more to a faster drum n bass inspired part that has more detailed synthesizer sound design similar to what I have been using in the past which should be practical and fun to implement. For this part, I experimented with different combinations of multi-effects, resampling and chopping synth audio, and warping that audio adding interesting artifacts to the sounds.
