Kenny’s Research Update #3

I further prepared my demonstration material including visuals, music, and the means of controlling all of this. When preparing the Zwobot visual effects, I quickly found out that Ableton Live’s macro controls are limited to how many parameters can be mapped at once without grouping groups of video effects adding eight more macro controls each time. From this research, I will have to adjust by possibly not controlling all video effect parameters via group macro controls. In adding to and refining my music performance plan, I utilized sound design techniques like resampling and warping audio and automating some audio warping parameters.

Because my project for this is getting so big and complicated, I also had to research troubleshooting steps when Ableton Live crashes. I eventually found and looked in Ableton’s crash logs discovering that Max for Live devices always cause my project to crash when opening. To fix this issue, I learned that I either have to delete some of these devices or re-add them to the project folder before opening thus preventing the opening of a plugin causing the crash or adding a plugin back to the folder that Ableton needs to recreate the project. This took a lot of time as well because usually after going through this process, parameters of Max for Live devices would be all set to their default making me go back into the project and re-enter all of the correct parameters. I also explored some great free software synthesizers and how they work such as Helm and Tyrell N6. In this process, I created many useful presets for the future of my project. I also tested brushes on my electronic drum set and they seem to be quiet enough so no one in my family is disturbed while still providing a viable way of practicing.
