This week I chose to go back to focusing on the creative aspect of creating a visual novel, mainly the visuals part. Since I don’t have a tablet I went through various YouTube tutorials on cleaning hand-drawn sketches and line work in Photoshop. From what I gathered, it seems that the most common ways of doing this start by cropping the image and then auto-adjusting the tone and contrast. Then the next step is to adjust the level to make the black parts and white parts stand out a little more. After that, by using the brush tool with a low opacity (~10%) and color dodge mode selected, you can clear out some of the grey parts from the pencil that aren’t a part of the main line work.
I tried these methods out myself but the results weren’t as effective as I was hoping. Mainly because my scanner not at college with me and my phone camera is not the best. However, it was good practice and I think the results would have been a lot better had I actually scanned it.
After this I looked at some other tutorials regarding methods on how to digitally color and I learned some basic shading and how to use various tools such as the different lassos and other filters.
