Prototyping

Kenny’s Prototype Sprint #2

For this prototype, I hoped to learn more about what others think of the interactive aspects of my project, and to possibly be given new ideas of different ways I and others can control the visuals and music.

I gained much insight into how others intuitively control the MIDI system teaching me more about how I should present a MIDI controller for people to test, while I demonstrate the entire system with an electronic drum set and MIDI controller. This taught me that I should label parts of the MIDI controller that I set up for others to use.

Two main things I noticed were that the control knobs were required to be turned too far to change the visuals without me demonstrating first. The other thing was for changing the visuals by triggering cymbals, one had to press the key with enough force to trigger a high enough velocity to alter the video effects. Many times, the cymbals were not pressed hard enough to trigger the video effects so I learned that if I were to have interactive keys for others to use, then I would have to make altering video effects not dependent on a high velocity MIDI signal.

Additionally, I received feedback to add more different videos to trigger at the same time as drums and synthesizers, and after experimenting with a Max for Live device controlling a rack of videos, I think I found a viable way to do this. I received ideas on how to further control the visuals through a MIDI pedal and possibly through a microphone or a small air controlled MIDI device.
