Prototyping

Chad’s Prototype Sprint #2

My prototype for this week was a smaller one but one that is important to the core of the game play. The type of weapon inventory my final game would use. This prototype was a step towards a more permanent system in the game so deciding how it would be managed was paramount. I hoped to learn what felt good to players while switching weapons on the fly. Would they prefer them bound to number keys or would they prefer what is known as a “weapon wheel” where a small window would open allowing for quick selection of a weapon. I had asked about other games they may have played in the past that featured ways to access multiple weapons on the fly and which they were most familiar with. The majority answered that the PC games they have played often featured a numeric selector in which weapons would be bound from 1-9 on the number keys. Some even expressed that the other methods like an inventory window are more akin to survival games and weapon wheels are more for shooters that feature controller support. Ultimately the numerical selection prototype I created was determined to be best suited for the fast-paced game play I am looking to achieve.
