Prototyping

Luke’s Prototype 2

For my second prototype, I demonstrated a concept I had for a screen that would display before games or matches in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which I would create in After Effects and would show the players’ gamertags, characters, which college they were from (since the video was a recording of a TCNJ vs Drexel crew battle), and the stock count. I was looking for feedback on the design of the screen, whether the viewers felt there was too much going on or if all of the information displayed felt relevant, and if there was anything else that could be added or removed. I went about getting this information by showing the initial design of the screen and explaining some of the concepts I had in mind for what could already be changed about it and what my final plans are for the full video, including showing the stock counts for each college in the top corners during the match. Not only did I ask for feedback in class but I also messaged the Lions Gaming Production Committee on Discord.

What I learned was that there was indeed a little too much going on and that the characters could be made smaller. I also tested out a new version of the screen without the stock counts and decided I might use that as the final version, as I would be displaying the stocks during the match anyway. Some people suggested putting the text for the players’ tags in front of colored blocks instead of using plain text with a drop shadow. I also gained feedback on the animations. Some thought they could be timed better and others liked the lines dashing around the “VS” text in the beginning. For the final prototype, I will combine an improved version of this screen with the footage from prototype 1, and I will had the stock count that I had in mind.
