In my research, I played the drums at different tempos to see which tempo would be my most comfortable where I can play normal drum beats and flashy linear fills and rudiments easily. I found that 200 BPM is a good tempo so I decided to make the song 200 BPM. I also watched live performances and to see what would be a good intro and decided that a “make noise” intro would the most exciting. I proceeded to sound design all of the synthesizers used in this song mostly from scratch. I then would play half-beat for a while until the song builds up into more of a drum n bass song where I can utilize faster drum beats and linear fills. To add interest to this song, I also incorporated randomized audio effects to specific instruments. Music production topics I researched while mixing this song and testing different master chains include mid-side equalizing, dynamic EQing, how loud each frequency should be of a finished electronic song, how to properly mix sub and mid-range basses, and using analog-modeled plug-ins to color the sound of instruments, groups of instruments, and in the final master effect chain. This research included listening to and evaluating various mixes and masters of different including exporting the unfinished version of mine.

I also found a drummer with a similar, but different interactive MIDI drum video system as mine named Julie Jenssen. His performance largely seemed improvised and he triggers short videos with sounds about nature and climate change so his performance had an overall theme. He did not use many other sounds besides the drums and sounds from videos. Also, he triggered various videos that would play either side by side, overlapping, or in random spots on a black background. These short videos would then disappear when they are finished. I think he was using EboSuite software, which seems to excel in doing this, whereas my system is more about applying Ableton devices in unique ways. This makes my system much more customizable including live video editing, rather than just triggering different videos.

I have mostly been researching sound design, how to create good mixes and masters of my music by creating a song in Ableton Live that I do plan to chop up and use parts of for my thesis demonstrations/performances.
