The Mixtape<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This week I researched the origin, lifespan, and the modern approach to the mixtape format. I started my dive into music history with this topic because I have coined my upcoming project as a mixtape instead of a proper album or LP. But what is the significance of my project being viewed as a mixtape instead of an album? Why is it important for there to be this distinction? And why is there so much confusion in the naming process of record releases? All of these questions and answers can be traced back to the origin of the mixtape?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing in popularity in the 1980s, the mixtape originated all the way back in the 60s as reel-to-reel recorders for music production. Beginning as a large and pricey item, the recorder was soon minimized and used for mono track recordings such as vocals or nondynamic components. The same minimized technology was released to the public as the cassette tape in order for the user to listen to their favorite pieces of music. By the 80s, the cassette tape was the primary way of consuming music because of constant and rapid technological. During this time the mixtape became popularized by recording and printing tracks from multiple different sources on to on specific tape. The mixtape, also known as the party tape, was a staple of youth culture due to its being able to play fan-favorite tracks in a simple and quick way. Disc Jockeys (DJ) used the mixtape as a substitute to turn tables when they did not have enough LPs to play. It was also incredibly common to have a DJ accompany an MC during the early days of rap and hip hop. This is why the term mixtape remains a staple in the culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though CDs and later streaming devices\/software made the original physical mixtape irrelevant, the impact it had on the community was irreplaceable. It used an at-home approach to recording, the same way rap was originally an in house\/small street approach of expression. However, as rap has grown over the past few years, the importance of the mixtape has returned. This at-home approach is used today not only in rap but in plenty of genres of music because creating tracks has never been easier or more accessible. The idea of it being homemade has a large role to play because a mixtape is usually not seen as perfect. Sometimes, the project may be rough around the edges and will use samples of other songs that are not cleared, but it is still a means of expressing oneself and getting your voice heard.
