Initial Concepts

Alex’s Initial Concept

  • My current project is an album, mixtape or lp — whatever you would like to call it, I have yet to decide on the format. I will be networking and gaining assistance from artists from Willingboro, the South Jersey area and/or some TCNJ classmates in order to help bring the project to life. I plan to produce, compose, arrange and mix the roughly 10 track project. Not only will I be working on the audio of the senior thesis, but I am also going to have direct input and executive decisions on all the visuals that will accompany the piece of work.
  • Removing my skills and interests from the table and looking at the project with a new set of eyes, I would probably end up doing some type of programming for my senior thesis. I have enjoyed programming in the past with javascript or CSS, but it has been about two years since I last programmed (aside from Max 8). I would probably end up creating some type of app or website that was easily accessible from each form of media.
  • A project that ignores all restrictions such as time, budget, resources, current capabilities, etc, is a film project. I would not just be the director of the movie though, I would want to write, act, and direct my project similar to the way some Hollywood filmmakers do (ie Quentin Tarantino).

  1. Alex, I think your album idea is really neat!

I really like how you will be networking and gaining assistance from other artists and TCNJ classmates to help bring the project to life! I think it is great that you will be doing the branding and graphics as well. To jazz it up even more, I think it would be totally cool if you created music videos to go with a few of the songs! By doing this, you are kind of incorporating the things you wanted to do in item 3.

  2. If you write, arrange, and mix a whole album, that shows off a wide array of skills. A lot of big albums today are worked on by so many people, so having a single author’s voice more prominent throughout the whole process could be really interesting.

Programming is definitely a useful skill to have, especially now that apps are everywhere. If you ever come up with an idea for an app, don’t be afraid to try your hand at developing it. You can learn a lot just by trying.

Writing/acting/directing a film gives you so much extra creative control that you can really use to your advantage. If you wanted to learn a little about filmmaking techniques, you could try to make a music video for one of the songs on your album.

  3. Awesome concepts! The album/mixtape/lp idea is very cool and gives you a lot of creative freedom to explore sonically and visually. I was thinking for the visual aspect and to possibly use ideas from concept 3, you could have the album tell a story like a movie would or just have individual songs tell their own story which may give insight into what visuals to use. After Effects and even Max 8 are great to use for music visualization and music videos if you want to go that route. If you would want to go towards more of a programming route, then the Javascript framework three.js (https://threejs.org/) has cool examples of interactive visual representations of music such as http://www.ro.me/film or http://void.hi-res.net/

  4. I love the idea of creating an album as your senior thesis and getting help from artists in the area. My only concern is that you have only seven months to create a ten-track project and that might not be enough time, especially if you are also planning on creating visuals for it.

Creating an app or website could be interesting because it is definitely a challenge and it would be an opportunity to learn something new while creating something unique. Writing, directing, and acting in your own film would also be a challenge but it would be a bit easier to put in place exactly what you envision instead of fixing minor details in code over and over.

I think how you could apply idea #3 to #1 is to create a music video for at least one of the tracks on the album, incorporating some of the visuals that you plan to make.

  5. I love the your idea of connecting with other artists to help make tour album come to life. I think that will make it super unique, because everyone involved would be from a nearby area. I just think that’s really cool.

I think your second idea could be fun and challenging, especially if it’s been a while since you have done some coding. Still, I think you’d be able to create something really neat.

Your third idea is super ambitious and cool. I feel like you could combine a small portion of this with your first idea and create a cool music video that features your own style and flair, at least for one song off of the album. This would also show off even more of your skills in your first project.
