Angel’s Ideas

Initial Concepts

  • Ground Idea: Good Will Idea
    • Create a Website Service/ Mobile Application to allow students to sign up into the service and request items they no longer desire to be picked up. These items can be can goods, unused bedding, kitchen appliances, bathroom supplies, etc. We would then be able to store these items in a storage location. For the next semester, students would request for any of the items we have available and we would check to see if we have the items available. This is also using the first-come-first-served way when handling these items.
    • For the basic understanding of the structure of the service: Sign up into a form,
      • Giving: what items are being given, if a picture can be provided.
      • Requesting: what items they would like.
  • Another Idea: Turning Sound into Color
    • Find a method of turning sound waves and manipulate it into useable data that will produce a specific color.
    • The data would be received and can be converted into RGB values.
    • Can be expanded into creating a paint program.
      • Adding motion on the guitar (Arduino) to be used as motion control and the strumming frequency can be used as stroke size (Volume Value)
  • Creative Idea: Using the CNC Machine/Laser Cutter
    • Creating a creative piece using these machines that will reflective on with time at TCNJ and the skills I’ve learned.

  1. I like that your primary idea is something that would be useful for TCNJ students right on campus. I know that I don’t have space in my house to store some things that would be nice to have in my dorm (like carpets), so being able to get an object at the beginning of the semester and give it away at the end sounds like something I could have really used.
One thing I wonder about is who will handle the picking up and dropping off of items. Would TCNJ have to hire people to do this?

Something I like about your second idea is that it’s finding a way to turn data into art. I feel like that’s a really underexplored idea at TCNJ, so a project like that would be neat to see.

You can make really interesting stuff using the laser cutters, and I’d be curious as to what creative project you’d come up with. As for mixing that with the first project, maybe incorporating laser cut designs into the interface of the app somehow?

  2. Out of these two concepts (the third isn’t really a concept but more of a start to one), I think the second would be best. The Goodwill concept would be difficult to present in the showcase and doesn’t have much of a wow factor while the sound to color idea has the potential to be really interesting. It’s not the first time it’s been done so you’d need to brainstorm how you’d go about yours differently. This project could be made into a physical installation, thus incorporating the maker’s space to show your skills with the laser cutter as well as programming.

  3. The first idea that you proposed is a very solid one. It sounds like it provides students an especially affordable way to shop around for college necessities from the description that you provided. However, while this idea is quite feasible I fear that it’s solidarity lies in it’s simplicity of function. The idea of creating a website like this falls into the category of “has been done before”. With sites like craigslist and Ebay to name a few that already exist, I can see a lot of comparisons being drawn between your project idea and these sites. The unique feature of your idea might lie in narrowing the targeting of the project. Instead of having it accessible as a site for anyone, potentially consider having this be a system that can be specifically implemented across various schools with the backing of the institution. That is to say have a parent company that buys used items from students to help them make cash and then works with schools to find a way to redistribute the items in a safe and affordable manner. The system would work to benefit both the school and the organization as it narrows the focus and streamlines the process. Given the semi-connective basis of your second and third choices you could make an audio visualizer that turns sound into color and have the data also be turned into a 3d printable or laser cut art piece based on specific sound data.

  4. I like how in your first concept you are helping people get items that may otherwise be unused. This may reduce the amount of items that are thrown out or unused for long amounts of time. Turning music into color is a very cool idea as it enhances how we experience music. Your reflective is awesome as it may combine many different technologies for a truly multimedia experience. For your first concept, maybe you could include lost and found items that have not been picked up within a certain amount of time so they do not go unused. Maybe you could use a CNC machine and Arduino to make a sensor that alerts you when an item is put into the storage location that also keeps track of how long it is there. One would manually have to enter the name of the item though.

  5. I like your first idea of the TCNJ good will app. It has a similar concept to apps like letgo, but I think allowing students to pick up unneeded items at the beginning of the semester would be very helpful especially with things like textbooks and other school materials.

Turning sound into color seems like another idea that has been done before but it seems like you have already found a way to make it unique, taking values from the guitar and converting the electrical signals into RGB values is something I don’t think I’ve seen before.

Using the laser cutter seems interesting but I don’t know what kinds of skills you have with it so I can’t accurately critique you. I’d say maybe you could combine that with the second idea to use the guitar’s electrical signals to control the laser cutter.

  6. I really like your first idea, mostly because it emphasizes the creation of the service. I really like that you’re making both a lot ebsite and an app. I feel like the app might be more useful, just because it might be used a lot during move-in weekend. The app would be more accessible than pulling out a laptop in the middle of the chaos.

Your second idea is also really cool, and it could create something super interesting. I like the idea of creating an art piece like this, because it’s dynamic. It could kind of be played with, which is neat.

I like your general third idea, but I don’t know the specific direction you would take, so I rwally can’t say much.
