Initial Concepts

Jamie’s Initial Concepts

1. My current idea is tailored to my skills and knowledge in data analytics, visualization, and design. I plan on researching sustainable housing– more specifically what goes into building a truly sustainable tiny home (costs, materials, etc.), and the best ways in which to design it. I have always had a passion for real estate, floor planning, and interior designing. I plan on designing and modeling the house in a 3D software program. During the showcase I will display the interior design of the living room, with my data and research in books on a little shelf, data visualizations hanging on the walls, and the 3D model displayed on a small television.

2. If I were to go in the opposite direction and come up with a different thesis project then I’d like to do something with animation. I’ve always loved storytelling through short animated films. I feel like animations are a great source for getting your words and messages out to the world. Unfortunately, I cannot draw for my life, so this idea is pretty much out the window, but I definitely think it would have been cool to do if I had the skills to do so. I also had this other idea of creating glasses or a hat of some sort that can transfer images from your mind directly onto a screen or into an AI file. This would be super helpful for those (me lol) who have all these wonderful ideas/images in their minds, but can’t seem to draw them on paper!

3. If I could create my most ideal project with no constraints, I would love to run with my current idea, but add something to it– actually building the house, full scale! I think it’d be amazing and fun to build, and it would provide people of what exactly I envision. I would be so proud to showcase this!

  1. 1. Hi! I think all 3 of your ideas are nice! Your sustainable housing ideas especially are cool because it has the potential to extend outside of the classroom/senior thesis setting and help others out in the world who need or are looking for sustainable homes.

    2. I don’t really have any pointers on what you can improve atm, but maybe instead of having just a 3D model shown through a TV, use IMM’s Makerspace to create the 3D model in the real life and showcase that on a table? You could also make the roof removable so that people would be able to peek in on the interior design of the house (or just the living room if you’re only planning on doing that).

    3. As for your 3rd idea, it’s clear that you’ve already related it to your first idea so gj on that!

  2. The first concept, is very creative and out there. I can visualize how this presentation to going to come out. I would say you can also look where these affordable would be placed? 3D models would work, although what could be interesting is to create a tiny version of your house. This way it can be incorporated using your third idea. It can be a scaled down version to like a doll-house sized. Lastly, I am sure you will further look into the pros and cons of the first idea. To further explain, is this economically viable? where would a project like this be perfect? Who are to gain from this? Who are to lose from this? Would this be more of a revamp to government housing or an easier and cleaner DIY small housing? I am very excited to see where this idea would go.

  3. You say in idea #2 that you don’t know how to draw for your life so you don’t think you could create an animation, but have you thought about motion graphics or 3D animation? You mentioned that you’re thinking about modeling the tiny house in a 3D software so maybe you could use that to put together an animation detailing how the house is designed. Maybe even create an animation about someone building a tiny house and applying some of the concepts you want to showcase.

  4. I love your sustainable housing concept, especially with the focus on tiny homes. While actually designing, acquiring materials, and building a full size tiny home within 7 months while living at TCNJ would be a very difficult feat, I think making an accurate wood model using the maker’s space would an awesome main feature to your project along with the interior design presented digitally. You could additionally engrave the floor plan on a thin piece of wood and have it stand to present on the shelf. Thinking about this makes me excited, I’m really looking forward to see your project progress!!

I’m curious by what you mean with “living room” of the tiny home — I think they’re generally all one space with a kitchen and sink, shower/toilet, and an elevated bed or one that comes out of the wall (all in sight of each other) with a whole lot of clever storage options to make the absolute most of the very small space — but I by no means know the actual definition of “tiny home” so totally ignore me if that’s wrong lol. I think visiting a tiny home and having a conversation with the designer/builder would really help to give you ideas too.

  5. I think that IMM technologies can be a great way to show people how to make the world more eco-friendly in a way that will stick and be memorable. Reading an article about sustainable homes might not leave an impact, but showing people a sustainable home through the magic of 3D modeling might stick in people’s heads a lot more. I wonder how people might navigate the 3D-modeled house. Would the navigation be keyboard controlled, or handled through something like VR (or both?)

Animation is definitely cool, and I’d love to see any animated film made right here at TCNJ.

Building a sustainable house that also serves as a public exhibit explaining how sustainable houses work would definitely leave an impact on people. If you could find resources on how to build sustainable homes, it might be nice to link to them somewhere in your first project.

  6. Awesome concept 1. I think sustainable housing is very important and sharing information on this subject is essential. Cool second concept, animation can bring stories to life as the possibilities are almost limitless. I like how your third concept provides physical examples and evidence behind your research and data. Maybe you could make a smaller physical version of this house to aid your first concept. I am thinking that you could possibly create a controllable character or hovering camera that can explore inside your 3D house so others can explore it. Going off that idea, you may also want to display some of your research in this 3D house so, while exploring, people can be guided through the research behind the decisions you made.

  7. I think your first idea is really cool. I think you’re focusing on sn interestung topic and presenting it in a unique way.

I think doing an animation would also be cool. If you’re not comfortable with your drawing skills, then you coild always make a cool 3d animation.

Your third concept is really cool. I really like the idea of making things physically, and this is no exception. Obviously designing and building a full-sized structure could be difficult, but I feel like you could make a much smaller version and include it in your first concept, if you had the time.
