1. The project is a system where music visualizers react to when I hit a drum, cymbal, or audio sample as I am playing an electronic drum set and MIDI controllers. By react, I mean that video effects are applied to the visualizers whenever I hit a drum or trigger an audio sample based on the amplitude envelope of the triggered sound. This project makes VJ loops (music visualizers used by DJs) more interactive than what is currently being performed by others because my music visualizer system directly responds to MIDI controllers as they are hit or triggered in some way in real-time. This system results in performances that can be live, recorded to make a video, or live streamed. For live performances, a projector or display monitors of some kind will be used to show the music visualizers around me as I play the electronic drums and MIDI controllers. For videos and live streams, a green screen will be used to display the visuals, though monitors or a projector can be used if needed. Ableton Live, Max for Live, and OBS are the main software programs for running this system.
2. This project is a website selling audio sample packs, beats, and music production tutorials both for free and for sale. Users of this website will be able to browse through sample packs they want based on any genre or artist currently available. Beats and software synthesizer presets will also be available in sample packs or on their own. Most video tutorials will be free and I will offer to do one on one tutoring sessions for users as another available service. The design of this website will encourage users to easily search for genres and artist-inspired products of their choice. Many products will be available for free and this service will use click funnels to help sell products.
3. This project is a live performance to the scale of a live Deadmau5 or Noisia show. The difference is that I will be incorporating my interactive video system from number 1, along with professional software like Resolume for more in-depth triggering and live editing of music visualizers. I will also link MIDI controllers to lights set up in the performance space to trigger in real-time by hitting drums and triggering audio samples. The music visualizers will be customly made for the performance space and will be set up on monitors or projectors along the ceiling and walls of the room and behind my drum set. My electronic drum set will also have many LED lights on it that respond to MIDI signals. All music and visuals aspects of this live performance will be custom and polished. Essentially, the whole room or concert hall will have visualizers and lights on the walls and ceiling responding to me triggering them with my interactive video and light system. Controlling all of this via MIDI controllers in Ableton Live using Max for Live devices or software like Resolume makes it so one musician can control most aspects of a live performance like this.
The first concept is very interesting, I am curious to how you would present this in the showcase. Your third could be mix with your first idea in a way like a silent disco event. You could make a performance live for the showcase and allow people to join in and listen making it very attracting and wanting people to come over and check it out.
Your second piece it very ambitious, I am wondering to see if the showcase will include a small version of the final piece, where would the music be gathered? Would there be problems with building a site or hosting other peoples work?
Your first idea seems really cool. I like the idea of an interactive visualizer, because I feel like it can be used to create a unique experience.
Your second idea seems super useful- video tutorials are always nice, and adding in sample packs could help people that are struggling with finding the right sound. I like this idea’s usefulness.
Your third option seems to me kind of like a more expanded and ambitious version of your first option. I feel that this might be difficult to set up, but wod end up really interesting. While I doubt that you’ll have the space to do this for the showcase, I think it would be super cool if you had a set of a few songs prepared so that you could demonstrate the full potential of yout system.
Hi! You’re idea sounds super cool! I think the visual will be amazing. I was wondering though– what would you visualization be representing– if anything? It might be cool to have a meaning behind the flashing lights. Personally, I am not very good with music technology, so I can’t give you more ideas, but the last two ideas sound really cool as well and like they’d fit in well with your first idea!!
