Initial Concepts

Luke’s Initial Concepts

  1. My first concept and the one that I am most likely going with is a documentary or video essay-style video about the top 5 TCNJ Super Smash Bros. for Wii U players of all time, delving into the history of each player and what made them all special. What would make this project unique is that I would be also comparing these players to Super Smash Bros. Melee‘s “Five Gods” (Armada, Mang0, Hungrybox, PPMD, and Mew2King), and explaining how their playstyles and careers at TCNJ compare to the Melee giants. I’d like to incorporate a different graphical aesthetic for each player, giving them all their own art style and backing tracks. Since I am getting more interested in graphic design, I could incorporate some of my own graphics, possibly even motion graphics. I could maybe do interviews as well.
  2. The second concept I had in mind that would use skills I am less experienced in would be a rhythm game. It would be a game centered around piloting a spaceship around timed obstacles and shooting targets/enemies to the rhythm. Each track would have its own “world” and aesthetics focused on bringing out my own vision of each track. I have always had visuals in my head with different colors and textures whenever I listen to a heavy electronic song so I want to put that into video game form. I am taking Games I currently so I could use the skills I am learning to make a basic prototype.
  3. Without any regards to time or employment, my third idea would be creating an electronic EP or album. I have always been interested in music production but never put much time into it aside from taking a class on it last year and making a humorous “album” in Ableton Live in eight hours as a challenge. Actually learning production and making a quality piece of music would be enjoyable.

  1. 1. Hi! Those are some nice ideas you’ve got there! Because I like videogames myself, I’d be curious about the Smash documentary and the rhythm videogame.

    2. I don’t really know much about filming so I don’t have any improvement advice or ideas atm, but it sounds like the documentary itself is going to have a videogame aesthetic in terms of looks, sounds, and maybe transitions and so on, which sound very cool.

    3. I feel like your 3rd idea and your 1st idea already relates as you’re making a backing track for each player. Maybe since your 3rd idea is specifically electronic music, you can stick with that genre for your 1st idea’s backing tracks?

  2. I really enjoy the idea of your first concept, especially the part where you plan on comparing the 5 gods. I think that’s a really interesting angle to approach from, especially when there’s such a difference in scale between two scenes that you would be comparing. It might also be neat because it could give insight to how the five gods would have started out if there had been the same kind of support for the scene that there is now.

I really like the idea of a rhythm game that switches aesthetics depending on the track. I feel like it would help sell each track as unique, but the core mechanics of the game could give the whole thing coherence. It’s certainly a unique idea, and I’ve never seen a game combine the aspects that you’ve listed.

Your third idea I feel could end up being connected to your second idea, at least if you had more time. A polished electronic album that’s gone through the entire production process would be a really cool thing to see, while also potentially expanding your knowledge of the process.

  3. Your documentary sounds like it has a fun concept, and if you incorporate multiple styles into it, it could be a really engaging product. If you decide to do interviews, you could even get some input from the people involved as to what art/music style best exemplifies them.

I really like that concept for a rhythm game, and the “different styles” aspect could really hold people’s attention and make them want to see more. It would be interesting to see how you’d visualize the different pieces of music.

Music production could be a lot of fun. Maybe if you wanted to, you could produce some of the songs used in your documentary, that way you get to learn something new while still keeping to your original idea.

  4. I like how your documentary will get different perspectives of skilled Super Smash Bros. players offering insight into their strategies and what’s unique about each of them. Interacting with music and visuals in a video game format has many possibilities and is a very cool idea. Electronic music is awesome and making an album is a great idea as there is much potential for great songs and sound design to be made. Maybe you can make the soundtrack for your documentary so you could make your electronic EP or album to enhance your first concept. I am thinking you could divide your documentary into parts or episodes to possibly be more consumable if you want to go in that direction.

  5. LUKE!

We’ve discussed this 🙂 I love the idea and I think you could really pull of the graphic designing, motion graphics, and video editing! You’re great at all those things! As for the electronic album, I think it’d be super cool for you to create your own music to go with your videos. I think everything is totally doable!
