Initial Concepts

Marcus Moore: Initial Concepts

  1. My first initial concept for my senior thesis project is a cinematic piece that mixes different visual styles together to present differing perspectives on a developing narrative. Using the idea of the uniqueness of an individual’s perspective, a single item will be examined by multiple characters in the piece all of whom interpret the origin of the item differently. As each character tries to describe their interpretations of the item’s history, the visual style will change depending on the narrator. Using a combination of animation techniques I will attempt to capture the variety that can be found in people’s perspectives.
  2. The second concept for my senior thesis project is a VR game that has the player solve puzzles in a 3D space with the unique ability to change the size of objects in the game as a tool to progress through the various levels presented. As the player progresses the levels will increase in difficulty and the player will have to become increasingly more creative to solve the puzzle presented.
  3. The third and final thesis project that I had in mind was to create an animated short film using motion capture actors and high quality scanned 3D assets. The short film would be a sci-fi genre prelude to a larger story in mind. The focus of the short film would be to highlight the technologies that would make the 3D renders look as photorealistic and visually appealing as possible.

  1. I really like the idea of depicting the same thing in multiple different styles to showcase different perspectives. It can make for a really engaging viewing experience, since you aren’t just looking at the same style of animation for the entire film.

Playing with the concept of size in VR could lead to some really interesting results, since unlike traditional games, VR actually has the feeling of being inside a physical “space”, where the size and position of your physical body are crucial to gameplay.

One great thing about animation is that it allows you to show off technology in an entertaining way. If you wanted to incorporate something like this into the first project, maybe have one segment of your first project be in 3D photorealism.

  2. I really like your first idea and I always enjoyed the idea of characters from different universes, with different aesthetics and perspectives, coming together for one common goal. The idea reminds me of Into The Spider-verse where different versions of Spider-Man from different universes (in the style of noir films, anime, classic cartoons, etc.) come together to stop Kingpin from destroying New York City.

What the first idea also reminds me of is the novel and film Cloud Atlas, where there is a common item (a composition called the Cloud Atlas Sextet) that connects the vastly differing stories of several characters across centuries, culminating in the final protagonist helping a member of another tribe escape Earth and join a colony on another world.

You could maybe incorporate a bit of motion capture into the first idea to give it a bit more life. I have a feeling the “change the size of objects” idea has also been put into a game but you could maybe making it unique by changing the properties of an object based on the art style/aesthetic of the “world” you are in.

  3. I love the first concept.!I think it is incredibly unique and the final product will be clearly distinct from most of your contemporaries. Mixing several different art styles is quite a task but you should have more than enough time to execute the idea. My only question regarding the first idea is: have you thought of the voice actors who will play these characters? If no voice actors are required and the entire story will only be told through visuals and sound design, more power to ya! Good luck with it my man. I notice that in the third concept you talk about photorealism as the style of the piece. Have you thought about using this as one of the styles to help depict the story in the first concept? I understand that this might be too taxing of an endeavor due to the time we have with our thesis and how large of a scope your project already is.

  4. I really enjoy your first concept it would be great to see a combination of different perspectives in a representation of different styles. I can’t wait to see more of it. Although it is just an early concept, I would have liked to learn more about it and what would it be. However, I am assuming in many weeks to come you will have something very descriptive.
It seems you are very big on visuals and video production/editing.

I would say you could try to incorporate your third piece with a the making video of your first video just to see the process to create the finalized piece.

  5. Really cool first concept. I think that changing the visual style for each character perspective is meaningful in conveying how different everyone’s perspectives are, while providing interesting and dynamic visual styles. I like how you focus on the possibilities of how game mechanics and physics can benefit gameplay in your second concept, especially considering how effective games like Portal are. Your third concept is a good idea utilizing 3D motion capture, which can create very smooth movement in animations. Maybe you could use motion capture in your first concept to possibly save time and capture interesting human performances if it is realistic. I am thinking you might want to mix visual styles also for your concept 1 like what was done in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse if that is what you are going for.

  6. I really love your first concept. I think combining various styles into one story can be really stunning, and it can help you tell a unique story. I really think this would look amazing.
Your second idea is really neat too. I like the fact that you’re planning to use a vr game, because I feel like it would really help the immersion, and get players to look at things in different ways.
Your third idea also seems neat. I like the idea of it being a prelude to something larger. I also think that using a super photorealistic sttyle would be very impressive.
