Initial Concepts

Rashid’s Initial Concepts

  1. The idea that I am most likely going to go with is creating a visual album based on suicide and mental health. I want to create an impactful musical/visual story that is filled with emotion. I am going to make the beats with Logic. Then I will write the songs and record them via the studio here at TCNJ. Finally I will make and edit the video with Adobe Premiere Pro.
  2. An interactive photo gallery. I would take and edit a few hundred photos based on different themes, then make a website to stem certain photos together to tell an interactive story. The photos would be edited in photoshop and the website created using html and css.
  3. thank u, next: The Video Game, where you play the life of Ariana Grande. From 13 The Musical to Nickelodeon to superstardom. Perform at concerts, win awards, and experience Ari’s exciting life in this action packed adventure!

  1. Rashid, I really like your idea. Mental health is a serious thing now-and-days, and I think it is important to raise awareness of this problem. I agree that videos and music are the best platforms to get a message across, and the only way to get people to acknowledge and act on something if through the emotional path. Would you consider creating an animated video? Sometimes the art style you choose can have more of an impact than if you were filming regular people (take Quentin Tarantino’s Kill Bill animated scene for example). I am really looking forward to what you can come up with!

  2. A “visual album” is a really interesting concept to me, since music videos are so ubiquitous now, but they always only focus on one song at a time. Having longform visual content to accompany an album could be a step above what a traditional music video can do, especially when discussing a serious topic like mental health.

I like the idea that photos in a gallery come together to tell a story, rather than just being grouped together because the same photographer took them. It gives people more incentive to look closely at the photos, since they all come together to make a bigger picture.

We get a lot of musician-themed biopics right now, but I can’t think of any that use the format of a video game, so there’s definitely potential there to showcase an artist’s life in ways that traditional film might not be able to. Bringing things back to the first idea, perhaps adding some element of interactivity to the visual album might make the project more poignant.

  3. Awesome visual album idea! It is definitely important to keep topics like mental health and suicide in discussion. I think combining music to visuals is really impactful and effective adding more interest and uniqueness to the music. Adobe Premiere Pro is great to make music videos with. After Effects also has great effects for music videos. This AE tutorial may help if you are interested: https://youtu.be/7Z0Jqtw3jrE
Also, you may have heard of the company Cymatics. They release a lot of free royalty-free hip hop and EDM samples and presets for VSTs like Serum and Massive if you are interested: https://cymatics.fm/
Your second concept is also really cool. I am thinking if you would want to make this website more dynamic you could use a Python framework like Django that automatically creates a content management system to easily manage content. Also, Javascript frameworks like three.js could add some cool visuals and interactivity to a website like this.
Your third concept also sounds fun and interesting. I was thinking maybe just focusing the game on a general popstar figure rather than Ariana Grande, or maybe making some of your visual album close to or just as interactive as a video game. Maybe something like this: http://www.ro.me/film

  4. I like all three of these ideas. A visual album would be great especially considering they are not very common these days, but the ones that do exist like Beyonce’s for her self-titled album and Lemonade were critically acclaimed. Interstella 5555 is an animated film produced as a “visual album” for Daft Punk’s Discovery and it tells a cohesive story that strings together seemingly unrelated tracks.

You could go with a similar theme for the photo gallery, taking hundreds of unrelated images and putting them together into one story. You could maybe even show all of the individual images, then have the user zoom out to discover that they actually form a mosaic of another image.

I think the third idea is hilarious and would make for a very fun video game. I think everyone has wondered at one point what it would be like to be Ariana Grande. Maybe you could incorporate a similar concept into your first idea, where the visual album follows the life of a pop star where they are performing concerts and appearing at award shows while trying to cope with mental illness.

  5. I think your first idea would be really cool. Combining both audio and visual would really create a bigger impact than either one seperately. I also think that the topic you’re focusing on is really important, and this is a great way to emphasize it.
Your second concept seems like a really cool idea. I like that you’re creating a story to go along with the pictures. It will make thembreally coherent and interesting.
Your third concept is cool because you’re still focusimg on a story. I think it would be really cool if you wrote and implemented your own music to add to the game, and maybe even tie in some themes frombyour first idea so that it’s aost a visual album in its own way.
