The information that I have bee researching over the past week has been an amalgamation of various film techniques that have been used in animation over the various decades. One of the key benefits of trying to tell a story using animation is that the visual elements on screen aren’t constricted to following natural rules about our world. The animation can be as outlandish as the creators are imaginative. The limitations of the animation are solely based on one’s creativity and the current technology available. Many animated films will convey conscious and subconscious messages through visual phenomena occurring on screen that would otherwise be impossible to perform in live action.
A lot of what I discovered in my research about animated film techniques revolved around using animation to subconsciously convey ideas. These techniques are usually animation specific and are often go unnoticed as a technique until the film has been watched multiple times. This research has been particularly insightful because it uncovers a lot of psychology that is an underlying component of conscious choices that filmmakers make regarding how they want the audience to perceive certain characters and events.
This information helps me explore different possibilities of how people will interpret my work and the things I can do to elicit particular reactions from the audience. Given that my project is based on the uniqueness of people’s perspectives, it is my desire to create a similar sense of mysticism around the meaning of certain elements in the story I am creating to allow people to find their own interpretations.
